A gap is defined as a break or hole in an object or between two objects. It is an unfilled space or interval; a break in continuity. The bible says in the book of Acts 17:24 – 28 NLT:

24 “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need.

26 From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.

27 “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us.

28 For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

From these verses, we can see that God orchestrated everything to draw us closer to Him. We have all the tools we need to get closer to God; with technological advancements, we have easy access to the Bible, audio books, messages and e-books online and on smart devices. So, why are we disconnected from God? What is the reason for this gap?

As defined earlier, a gap is an unfilled space or interval; a break in continuity. How do we bridge this gap as Christians? Using the concept of gap analysis, let’s analyze this gap and review ways to close it.

Gap analysis can help to determine if there is a difference between desired performance and actual performance.

I brought this up to explain how to go from your current/actual state to your desired state with God.

Step 1: Analysis.

Is there a gap? Why do we have this gap?

  1. Lack of relationship with God: You cannot know God if you don’t spend time with Him Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me (NKJV).
  2. Association: 1 Cor. 15:33. Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners
  3. Social media: Some things you find online can soil your relationship with God. Prov 4:23 Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. (NLT)
  4. Delayed expectations: You’ve been asking God for something, you’ve prayed and expected for so long that you are now at the point where you’ve just given up because it seems like it’s not going to happen

Step 2: Impact of the gap.

Can this gap affect us in any way?

The answer is yes. It can affect us in many ways including spiritually, physically, socially, and emotionally. Personally, I feel more disorganized and frustrated when I’m out of sync with God

Step 3: Alignment.

How can we align ourselves with God?

Do you remember the honeymoon phase in every relationship where you spend so much time trying to know the other person? This is the same rule we have to apply. God has given us this beautiful thing called choice. So, we have to choose him, and the ways we can choose him daily include:

  • Spending more time with God (daily and even in activities) James 4:8
  • Living purposefully. 1 Pet. 2:9
  • Relationship: if need be, change your circle
  • Find a mentor or someone you can be accountable to

Taking these practical steps can help us realign and reconnect with God.

Step 4: Audits

For this, you need to set your check points daily and also prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit for help with this. Now the bible says, let he who thinks he stands, take heed lest he falls (1 Cor. 10:12 KJV). This means, you need to evaluate yourself daily according to biblical standards and surrender yourself totally to God.

The more you let go of yourself, the more you become like Him. I mentioned setting check points because you may not know you are falling; it is those you surround yourself with, or the checks (you have created with the Holy Spirit) that will help you become cognizant of your shortcomings

Thanks and have a blessed week ahead.
