Music is very impactful because it plays a key role in our daily lives. From the sounds that help us to sleep to those that help when we are in pain, music is involved in a lot of our routine activities.
I experienced something this year and as a result of this, I started battling with depression and I did not even know it. I barely prayed at some point plus the pressure at work was a daily tipping point for me. Sometimes, I would listen to messages to make myself feel better but once it was over, I quickly switched to unedifying songs.
On this glorious day, I woke up and prayed. I had this leading in my spirit to just meditate on God’s word and listen to some songs. At the end of the day I felt better—those things that seemed difficult were easier to deal with. It turned out that the more I listen to these gospel songs, the more impactful and interesting they became. The process of changing my song choices is still a work in progress but I am getting there.
As a Christian, you should be sensitive to the power of music as it has the ability to affect you in a positive or negative way. When a song is written, I believe the intent is not just to communicate what the writer is feeling but also to stir up something in the mind of the listener. Now when they communicate sexuality, violence, drugs and concepts which are in opposition to our lives as Christians, we unknowingly feed our inner man when we listen.
I would like to share an ex-convict’s testimony as an example of how what we feed our inner man affects us. He had been listening to songs about violence and never realized the impact until his sister reported a guy to him. His immediate reaction was to stab the guy in the neck. This turned out to be the carotid artery and the guy died shortly after—this all started with music.
Please take some time to read 1 Samuel 16:14–23. After the spirit of God had left Saul, an evil spirit tormented him. The Bible recorded that whenever David played his harp in Saul’s presence, Saul would be well and the evil spirit would leave him. How powerful music is!
As Christians, let us not be ignorant of satan’s devices. We should be selective of what we feed our spirit man. Music is very powerful and I would like to encourage you consider your music choices. There are so many options even for working out too: Lecrae, Elevation Worship, Bethel Music, Maverick City, Tye Tribett, and many others.
